Understanding Sciatica: What it Really Is and How to Conquer It

Sciatica” is a term many of us have heard, usually meaning “leg pain that starts in the back.” But to truly silence it, you need to understand what’s behind it—and how a targeted care plan can make all the difference. At Sound Chiropractic, we specialise in treating sciatic conditions and helping patients move without fear of pain.

What is sciatica?

  • Sciatica describes pain (or other symptoms) caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or its roots in the lower spine.
  • Symptoms can include: sharp or burning pain down one leg; tingling or numbness; weakness; the pain often increases with standing, bending forward, or prolonged sitting.
  • Causes vary: a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative changes, or even muscle-imbalances causing nerve irritation.

Why some treatments fail — and how we approach it differently

  • Many treatments treat only the symptoms (pain relief) and not the cause (nerve root irritation, spinal alignment, muscle/movement deficits).
  • At Sound Chiropractic we begin with a detailed consultation, physical exam, & imaging review (if you have it) to identify the root cause: joint dysfunction, disc involvement, muscle imbalance. Sound Chiropractic –
  • The treatment plan may include: spinal adjustments to restore motion and relieve nerve stress; soft-tissue therapies; rehab exercises to stabilise the spine and strengthen the core/glutes; ergonomic advice (to reduce aggravating factors like sitting long hours).
  • We partner with your other healthcare providers as needed to ensure a comprehensive approach. Sound Chiropractic –

3 things you can start doing today

  • Stretch gently: Supine hamstring stretches, piriformis stretches and hip-flexor opening can reduce nerve tension (move into them gradually, avoid force).
  • Strengthen smartly: Include core and glute-work (like glute bridges, bird-dogs, side planks) 2–3 times/week to support your lower back and pelvis.
  • Alternate your posture: If you sit long hours, use the “30/30” rule: after ~30 minutes sitting, move/stand for 30 seconds, reset your posture, then continue. Even standing for part of the time helps reduce nerve irritation.

Sciatica doesn’t need to be a life sentence of leg pain or discomfort. With the right tools and support, you can regain mobility and comfort. If you’re struggling with radiating leg pain, numbness or just a nagging lower-back issue that seems to lead nowhere, let’s talk. At Sound Chiropractic in Tysons Corner, we’ll help you investigate the root cause and build a plan with you. Book your appointment today.
